Used Car Buying Checklist: What to Check Before You Pay

A practical UK used-car checklist covering vehicle identity, history, MOT, mileage, finance, inspection, paperwork and the test drive.

Buying a used car is easier when you separate the process into evidence you can check before the viewing, checks you make beside the vehicle and final verification before payment.

Before travelling, confirm the registration details, current MOT position, tax status and recorded mileage history. For a purchase where the value justifies it, investigate deeper history such as write-off, stolen, finance and available salvage information. Doing this early can save a wasted journey.

At the vehicle, compare the registration and VIN with the paperwork. Check panel gaps, paint finish, glass markings, tyres, lights and signs of leaks or corrosion. Look underneath where safely possible and inspect the cabin for warning lights and wear that seems inconsistent with the claimed mileage.

Review the V5C and service history carefully. The V5C identifies the registered keeper; it is not a guarantee of ownership or a substitute for finance and identity checks. Check invoices and service records for dates and mileages that support the vehicle's story.

Take a proper test drive where legally possible and insured. Check cold starting if you can, steering, braking, clutch or gearbox operation, suspension noises, engine temperature and dashboard warnings. Do not let a seller rush this stage.

Before payment, resolve every material discrepancy. Confirm what is included, keep a written record of the transaction and use a payment method that creates an appropriate audit trail. If the history, paperwork and physical vehicle do not line up, walking away is a valid buying decision.

A vehicle check is most useful when it helps you decide what to inspect and ask next. Treat data as part of a broader due-diligence process rather than a guarantee.
