UK vehicle tax check

Check a vehicle's tax status by number plate.

Vehicle tax status is a quick way to confirm whether the registration is currently shown as taxed or SORN. It is useful context when viewing a car, but it is not a substitute for a full history check.

Taxed and SORN explained

A taxed status means the vehicle is recorded as having vehicle tax in force. SORN means a Statutory Off Road Notification has been made and the vehicle should not be used or kept on a public road unless correctly taxed again.

Tax does not transfer with the car

When a vehicle changes keeper, the existing tax does not simply transfer to the buyer. A buyer should arrange their own vehicle tax before driving the car on public roads.

Use tax status with the rest of the vehicle record

Tax status tells you about licensing, not ownership quality or hidden history. Combine it with MOT, mileage and deeper buyer checks before committing to a purchase.

How to use this information

MyPlateCheck combines available vehicle data into buyer-focused checks. Data can contain omissions or recording errors, so use it alongside the V5C, VIN, service history, seller evidence and a physical inspection. Resolve material inconsistencies before paying for a vehicle.

Questions buyers ask

Useful answers before you check.

Does vehicle tax transfer to a new owner?+

No. The buyer needs to tax the vehicle themselves before using it on public roads.

What does SORN mean?+

SORN is a Statutory Off Road Notification, indicating the vehicle is declared off road rather than taxed for public-road use.

Does tax status prove a car is safe to buy?+

No. It is only one licensing status and does not replace MOT, finance, write-off, theft or mileage checks.
